Preparation & Weaving Base Using 1/2" flat, cut 14 spokes at 8" each. Mark a pencil dot on one end of wrong side of reed on each spoke. This will help you easily remember which is the wrong side when you insert spokes into wooden base.
Insert handle into slots in base--use tac nails to secure if neccessary ( included with base frame).
Soak spokes and insert 7 spokes on each side of handle with rough side facing up ( side with your pencil dot). Be sure you space the spokes evenly.
Soak 1 or 2 long pieces of #2 Round Reed ; twine or chase weave 2-3 rounds until you reach the handle. Your spokes may shift around on your first round and can be a little frustrating, just be sure you keep sliding them back in place so they are spaced evenly. Next round they should stay in place nicely. When you reach the handle, end your twining or chase weave and upsett your spokes.

Weave the Sides of the Basket Each row is woven "start-stop", over under weaving.
Row 1- 1/2" flat, starting "over" handle.
Rows 2, 4 and 6- 3/8" flat.
Rows 3 and 5- 1/2" flat.
Row 7 ( rim row)- 3/8" flat going "over" handle.

Rim and finish After weaving your last row, pack down your rows tightly and soak tops of spokes. Cut inside spokes flush with top of last row. Bend outside spokes over to inside of basket. Trim excess and tuck down into first available weaver to hide.
Measure inside and outside for rims and add 2"--cut rims from 1/2" flat oval. Sand and shave down edges of your rim pieces. Soak well and clip on your rim pieces with clothespins or spring clamps. Make your overlaps on opposite sides of basket, avoiding the handle so you don't have excess thickness there. Fill rims if desired with seagrass. Single or double lash with 1/4 " flat.
Stain basket if you like. I used Weavers Stain Black Walnut. If you like a distressed look, when stain is dry, sand down edges of the handle, rims and along weavers here and there.
Attach candlelabra lamp adaptor to handle ( attaches just like a c-clamp and can be removed when you like). Use a 5 watt or 15 watt candle base bulb ( 5 watt makes a nice night light). Attach lampshade and turn to face a "handle side--I just think it looks nicer this way.
Tie in your 2" crackled wooden heart, fill your basket with scented rosehips or potpourri--find the perfect place for this sweet basket lamp, switch on the light switch and enjoy!!!
Don't forget to sign and date the bottom of your basket.
If you are good at hand painting you may want to paint a significant year or date on the wooden heart.
