St. Patrick's Day is a major holiday in our house! So this is a very appropriate way to start our free pattern page. I am dedicating our Irish Soda Bread Basket to three special Irish people--my Grandmother, Bridget O'Hanlon, my husband's Grandmother, Mary Dooley--I hope they have found each other in heaven and are enjoying watching their great grandchildren grow---and..my husband Rich, born on St Patrick's Day with red hair and twinkling Irish eyes, the cutest leprechaun you ever could meet!

This is a simple basket to weave, and the pottery shamrock may be removed and others tied in if desired. All supplies needed for this basket may be ordered right here on this page following the instructions. Our Irish Soda Bread recipe also follows the weaving instructions.

Weaving the basepadSoak spokes until pliable. Take the six spokes that are marked 1 1/2" from center and lay in a circular pinwheel pattern, marked sides facing up and centers aligned. The 1 1/2" marks should have created a small circle which will be your guide for beginning your twining.

Soak several long strands of #2 Round Reed ( Moss Heather). Twine until you have room between your first six spokes to begin adding the second set of six--add these in one by one and continue twining until you have approximately a 7"-8" circle. End your twining by tucking the ends into the weave. If you have used the different shades of green from the Moss Heather you will have a pretty varigated look to your base.

Upsett your spokes GENTLY--not sharply, as you want the basket to curve up gracefully like a bowl.

Rim and finishpadCut all inside spokes flush with the top of the last row of weaving. The outside spokes should be soaked and then trimmed and tucked to the inside of the basket. Before you tuck the outside spokes, decide where you want to place the shamrock wire handles--I placed mine inside the basket on a spoke to be tucked, inserting the ends of the wires down into the last rows of triple twining. I cut that spoke to be tucked in half down the center, then criss crossed it around the shamrock and then tucked into the weave.

Rim with 1/2" flat oval, fill the rim with seagrass if desired, and double lash with 1/4" flat Moss Heather or any shade of green. If desired, GENTLY bend the shamrock wire handles out to the side as in photo.

Tie on your Shamrock buckle with a thin piece of twine or jute. Line your basket with a pretty piece of linen or lace and a fresh baked loaf of Irish Soda Bread.

Happy St. Patrick's Day !

Irish Soda Bread Recipe ( with a twist)padGraciously donated by fellow weaver Reggie Maps--thanks Reggie! The "twist" was added by me since my kids won't eat anything that doesn't have a bit of chocolate in it.

INGREDIENTS :

4 cups flour

1/2 cup butter ( melted)

1 tsp salt

1/2 cup sugar

2 1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

hand full of caraway seeds

1/2 pkg white raisins ( golden)

1 egg ( slightly beaten)

1/2 pint sour cream

1/2 pint milk

optional ( twist): 1/2-1 cup chocolate chips

Sift dry ingredients. Stir in caraway seeds and raisins. In a large bowl blend egg, sour cream, fill sour cream container with milk and add to egg mixture. Add melted butter. Blend well with wooden spoon. Stir dry ingredients into liquid. Add chocolate chips if desired. Place in greased and floured 9" round pan. Make imprint of cross in top with knife. Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. Yummmm. Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
