PREPARATION & THE BASE You may want to pre-stain and varnish your wooden base with an exterior varnish. I do this with all my wood bottom baskets for a more professional finish. Sand in between coats with a paper bag for an ultra smooth finish.
Cut your stakes and mark on the rough side with a pencil dot to make inserting them easier. Soak your stakes , and insert into the base groove with rough side up- 9 stakes on each long end, 6 stakes on each short end and 1 stake in each corner.
Using #3 Round Reed, twine 3 times around base or chase weave 6 individual rounds, whichever you prefer.
Dampen your stakes again and upsett gently.

WEAVING THE SIDES Before weaving decide which will be the back of your basket. Try to keep the back side of your basket straight and let the front flare out just a bit. About half way up the side dampen your basket and give the back a "push" in with your knee. This makes the shape of the basket easier to rest against your hip.
Weave start-stop, over under as follows:
3 Rows........3/8" flat
10 Rows.......7mm or 1/4" flat oval
10 Rows.......3/8" flat
6 Rows.......7mm or 1/4" flat oval
Last Row.....3/8" flat inserting your shoulder strap and bushel handle as you go. Shoulder strap slips onto the 8th stake to the left and 8th stake to the right of the back center stake. Bushel handle slips onto the 2cnd stake to the left and 2cnd stake to the right of the back center stake. *** NOTE-Be sure the stakes you slip the straps onto are weaving "over", not under. These must be the stakes that you cut flush on the inside before you add the rim. If your weaving does not work out this way--weave another row so it will work.

FINISH & RIM YOUR BASKET Let the basket dry, preferably over night, then pack your rows down tightly. Soak the ends of your stakes, cut the inside stakes flush with the top of the basket and cut & tuck the outside stakes into the first available weaver inside the basket.
Rim with 1/2" flat oval and double lash with 1/4" flat.
Stain your basket if you like-I used Weavers Stain Maple. If you prefer a natural finish, I recommend you stain with Weavers Stain Clear Natural to protect your Barn basket.
Tie on your Mare & Colt leather tie on with a thin piece of jute, fill your basket with horse and riding goodies and head to the barn ! Don't forget the apples :)
